Mehmood Ali birth anniversary: Lesser-known facts about the ‘King of Comedy’

Mehmood Ali, one of India’s greatest comedians was born on September 29, 1932, and today marks his 89th birth anniversary. He was a multi-talented actor, popular as a comedy legend.

Mehmood was born and brought up in Mumbai in 1932. His father, Mumtaz Ali, was a stage actor and dancer and was famous in the 40s and 50s era. He began his acting career as an artist in a Bombay Talkies film.

• Mehmood was popularly known as the ‘King OF Comedy’ in Indian cinema. He has acted in more than 300 films and debuted from the film ‘CID’ in Bollywood.
• Before making his career in Bollywood, Mehmood was a tennis coach of Meena Kumari. He was also a driver of filmmaker PL Santoshi. During coaching time, he met Meena Kumari sister Madhu and fell in love with her. He allegedly forced her to get married to him threatening suicide.
• Mehmood and Madhu divorced and reportedly Mehmood was linked-up with Aruna Irani but they did not admit their relationship. Some reports also suggested that they got married. His official second marriage, however, was with Tracy Ali.
