National Henry C. Ramos Day 2023: The national William Grant & Sons established Henry C. Ramos Day on October 27 to commemorate and celebrate Henry C. Ramos for his renowned cocktail formulation. It is best known that Ramos invented the Gin Fizz, the quintessential and preeminent cocktail within the Fizz family. A combination of sugar and lemon juice, the Ramos Gin Fizz is garnished with ice and carbonated water. There have been disputes regarding the identity of the drink’s inventor. Certain individuals ascribe the creation of the cocktail to Henrico C. Ramos, Henry’s sibling, whereas others contend that the renowned bartender himself conceived of it.
Carl, also known as Henry C. Ramos, relocated to New Orleans from Indiana, where he and his brother purchased the Imperial Cabinet, their first saloon. The Gin Fizz, which was first crafted in 1888, is regarded as one of the finest fizz beverages in existence. Dry gin, heavy cream, powdered sugar, lime juice, fresh lemon juice, egg whites, and citrus water were all components of the original recipe. After approximately 12 to 15 minutes of vigorous shaking, it is poured and combined with carbonated water. Due to the vigorous effort required for mixing, some bartenders opt to streamline the procedure by substituting the initially planned powdered syrup with a readily available syrup, thereby reducing the time required.
There have been divergent opinions regarding the inventor of the gin fizz, as both brothers owned the Imperial Cabinet, which served as their inaugural café. However, Henry Charles Ramos is widely recognized as the inventor of the cocktail. The appropriate ingredients and the capacity to vigorously agitate the mixture are essential for the successful preparation of the Ramos Gin Fizz. The impact of vigorous agitation was underscored in 1915, when shaker boys were contracted to agitate the cocktail in observance of Mardi Gras.
In the late 1910s, prohibitions on the manufacture, distribution, importation, and transportation of intoxicating beverages into the United States were implemented. A few years after his demise, Ramos’ Gin Fizz ceased to exist due to this new law. According to legend, Huey Pierce Long Jr. popularized Ramos Gin Fizz while on a business journey to New York with the beverage. He regarded it as a “present to New York.” In contemporary times, numerous concoctions continue to be crafted by incorporating flavors, fresh fruits, and liquors into the traditional Ramos Gin Fizz formula.
