National Heroes and Benefactors Day 2024 (Belize): Belize observes National Heroes and Benefactors Day on March 9. Its purpose is to pay homage to and dedicate Baron Bliss, whose countless contributions improved the standard of living of the Belizean people.
Formerly known as Baron Bliss Day, National Heroes and Benefactors Day is an important holiday in Belize. The festival was observed in remembrance of the deceased Baron Bliss. By his demise, the magnate was regarded as a martyr, bequeathing to a trust fund nearly two million Belize dollars. His contribution improved the livelihoods of numerous Belizean citizens.
Baron Bliss was given the name Henry Edward Ernest Victor Barrettes at birth in 1869. During his youth, he acquired the ancestry-related appellation of Fourth Baron Barreto. Fabricating gun parts for the British, he amassed a considerable fortune and achieved engineering success through diligent effort. Moreover, he presided over several conflicts and was an exemplary Justice of the Peace for several years, frequently advocating for the rights of the populace. Unfortunately, Baron Bliss contracted polio at the age of 42 and developed paralysis from the waist down; this rendered him incapable of continuing his career as an engineer. However, his spirit remained as robust as ever.
After realizing that he had an abundance of leisure to pursue his interests, Baron Bliss resolved to embark on a voyage to the Caribbean, where he did so while sailing and fishing. He delighted in connecting with nature while spending time on the water. For him, it was a tranquil and soothing experience.
Baron Bliss visited Trinidad and the Bahamas, where he observed the magnificent reefs and interacted with the locals. He later settled in Belize, formerly British Honduras, where he had such a wonderful time that he decided to dedicate the remainder of his life. His home, however, was never the mainland. He instead spent his days adrift on his yacht and bequeathed his fortune to the Honduran people upon his demise.
