Bang Clang Day 2024 (US): Annually observed on March 9, Bang-Clang Day commemorates the 1862 Battle of Hampton Roads, which occurred during the American Civil War. The battle holds historical significance as it marked the inaugural encounter between two ironclad vessels; the origin of the day’s nomenclature is likely self-evident.

A two-day engagement between the CSS Virginia of the Confederacy and the USS Monitor of the Union ushered in a new era of naval warfare. On this Bang-Clang Day, pause for a moment to reflect upon this extraordinary engineering achievement that revolutionized naval operations worldwide.

The Origins of Bang Clang Day

Initially commissioned in 1855 under the name Merrimack, the CSS Virginia was subsequently redirected to Norfolk, Virginia, in 1861 for maintenance due to the outbreak of the American Civil War. After suffering defeat at the hands of the Union, the Confederates rebuilt the ship and gave it the new name Virginia. The South held out hope that the vessel, which had effectively destroyed a number of the timber ships belonging to the North, could breach the Union blockade imposed on Southern ports.

On the contrary, Virginia quickly encountered the North’s Monitor. Constructed in Brooklyn using an innovative design, the 172-foot ironclad vessel made its arrival at Hampton Roads, Virginia, a port situated at the estuary of the James River, on March 9. There, it encountered Virginia, which was endeavoring to destroy the Union’s wooden Minnesota.

The duel lasted approximately three hours and concluded in a lackluster manner, with Virginia returning to her naval yard for maintenance and the Monitor resuming her station, all the while the blockade persisted.

Their expeditions concluded shortly thereafter. Following the Confederate evacuation of Norfolk in May of that same year, the Virginia capsized due to errors made by its crew. In contrast, the Monitor perished in December off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Its wreckage was discovered in 1973, and in 2002, divers were able to recover a number of its artifacts.
