NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27:Some students who plan to apply for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, or NMMSS, now get extra time. The National Scholarship Portal has pushed the last date for NMMSS applications for the 2026-27 academic year to October 31, 2026.
A recent update on the NSP shows the application window stays open till October 31. On September 30, 2026, the portal recorded 88,522 new applications and 1,97,133 renewal applications.
For the current academic year, the updated NSP schedule is:
The deadline on October 31 matters a lot. Earlier, the Ministry had moved the application date only until September 30. After that, checks at the institute and district level went on.
The NMMSS is a scholarship run under the central sector. The Department of School Education and Literacy in the Ministry of Education manages it. The goal is to help strong students from families with low income. It also aims to support them to keep studying beyond Class 8.
This scheme releases one lakh new scholarships each year. These are for students who join Class 9. They must qualify in the selection test held by their own State or Union Territory. If students meet the rules, the benefit can keep going in Classes 10, 11, and 12 via renewal.
Only students in State Government schools, government aided schools, or local body schools are covered.
After selection, the yearly amount is ₹12,000. The payment goes straight to the student’s bank account. This is done through DBT using PFMS.
The income limit for parents is ₹3.50 lakh per year. For the selection exam, the usual academic requirement is at least 55% marks or the same kind of grade. SC and ST students get a relaxation of 5 percentage points.
Students applying through NSP must first complete their One-Time Registration (OTR). The OTR generates a unique number used for scholarship applications on the portal.
After completing OTR, students can log in to NSP, select the NMMSS scheme and complete the required application details and verification process.
1. Visit the official National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in
2. Generate a One-Time Registration (OTR) number using an Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
3. Log in to the application portal using your OTR credentials.
4. Select the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme under the Department of School Education and Literacy.
5. Enter institutional details, academic marks, category certificates, and bank account information.

7. Submit a printed copy of the submitted form along with supporting income and caste certificates to the school principal or Institute Nodal Officer for verification
The current NSP scheme listing, however, now shows October 31, 2026 as the student application closing date. NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27 is therefore open for eligible fresh and renewal applicants until October 31, 2026.
