Government of Ireland Scholarship 2026:The Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) 2026 has officially opened its application cycle, for an opportunity for Indian students who want to study in Ireland. The Irish government established the program as its primary initiative to partner with Irish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for international talent recruitment and academic excellence achievement.

Applications for the 2026 intake opened on 29 January 2026, with a firm submission deadline set at 5 pm Irish time on 12 March 2026. This annual scholarship cycle is highly competitive and attracts students from non-EU/EEA countries including India.

Government of Ireland Scholarship 2026: What the Scholarship Offers?

One of the most compelling aspects of the GOI-IES programme is its financial support package. Successful applicants receive:

  • A €10,000 annual stipend which helps students pay their living expenses during their complete academic year of full-time study in Ireland.
  • The host Irish higher education institution provides full tuition fee coverage for the scholarship year which reduces the financial costs associated with international education.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for the scholarship is clear but rigorous. To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be domiciled outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, and the UK, a condition that includes Indian nationals.
  • Have a conditional or final offer of admission to a full-time programme at an eligible Irish HEI before applying.
  • Apply for programmes at NFQ Level 9 or Level 10 typically master’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas, or PhDs.
  • Submit proof of admission from the Irish university with the scholarship application.

Importantly, candidates who have previously received a GOI-IES scholarship are not eligible to reapply, and the 2026 cycle also excludes applicants from Russia and Belarus under this call.

Application and Selection Process

Students must submit their applications through the official online portal once it goes live. The applicants need to provide their academic records and university offer letters together with two references and their supporting documents.

“The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is an established national initiative, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and managed by the Council. A new national research agency, Taighde Éireann/Research Ireland, has been established by the government. The agency will amalgamate the work of the Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland. The full operation of Taighde Éireann will be enabled over the coming period,” says the official statement.

The submission process consists of two assessment stages which include an initial eligibility check and a shortlisting process conducted by the HEA and participating universities followed by an independent assessment panel evaluation. The selection process evaluates candidates based on their academic performance, communication abilities, extracurricular activities, and their explanation of why they chose Ireland as their study destination.

The successful candidates must start their studies in September or October of 2026 while they complete their program study in Ireland.
