The History of Robert E. Lee Day

Robert Edward Lee was descended from a lineage of legendary members of the United States military and Virginia blue blood. Lee entered and graduated second in his class from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1829, seemingly continuing in the family business.

He did not engage in any form of direct combat for a considerable duration thereafter during his military tenure. That is, until the United States conflicts with Mexico in 1845. Several soon-to-be high-ranking army officials, including George Pickett, Ulysses S. Grant, and Winfield Scott, were among those he collaborated with and met. Lee was concurrently a member of Scott’s staff during the 1847 conquest of Mexico City. Throughout this conflict, Lee’s operations significantly garnered admiration from both his superiors and peers. As a result, he was consistently promoted, ascending from the ranks of major to lieutenant colonel to colonel.

Following that, America was engulfed in a catastrophic civil war, which resulted in the division of the entire country into two major armies: the Union Army and the Confederate Army. Lee was a highly regarded member of the United States Military, which led Abraham Lincoln to recommend him for the command of the “Union Army” in April 1861. Conversely, Lee declined this assignment and returned to Virginia, where the Civil War was just commencing, rather than resigning his command and returning home. To lend his support to his native state, he advised Confederate leader Jefferson Davis and subsequently assumed command of the Army of Northern Virginia in the “Confederate States Army” in 1862. Three years later, he besieged this position until his eventual surrender.
