National Charlotte Day History

Among those with the name Charlotte are several individuals of international historical importance, such as the English poet and novelist Charlotte Bront. Their novels are classified as English literary classics. Charlotte Bronte, who was born on April 21, 1816, was the third of six children born to Irish Anglican clergyman Patrick Bronte and Maria Bronte.

Charlotte Bronte, then 14 years old, enrolled at Roe Head School in 1831. However, she abandoned it within a year to begin home-based instruction for her sisters, Anne and Emily. She was appointed governess for the Sidgwick family in 1839 for a brief period before returning to Haworth, where the sisters had established a school. However, their endeavor proved unsuccessful, as they were unable to entice students. They both published novels in 1846 under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, respectively, shortly thereafter.

The publishers rejected Charlotte Bront’s debut novel, The Professor, but they welcomed her subsequent publication, Jane Eyre, which was released in 1847 to widespread acclaim. 1848 saw the disclosure of their pseudonymous works by her and her sisters, which were promptly acclaimed within the literary circles of London. She passed away last among her entire sibling group. She wed in June 1854, and after her pregnancy, she passed away on March 31, 1855, most likely from hyperemesis gravidarum, an adverse pregnancy condition characterized by severe nausea and vomiting.
