Section 377: This parents of LGBT member steps forward in pride saying ‘My son is not a criminal anymore’

The Supreme Court’s historic verdict on decriminalising Section 377 filled the LGBTQAI+ community with joy all over the country on Tuesday. The members of the LGBT community gathered at different places across the country to celebrate the verdict. A similar sense of joy could be felt on social media as not just the LGBT community members but also their supporters expressed their joy through their posts in words and images. An LGBT community member from Maharashtra, Arnab Nandy wrote a long post on his Facebook account to share his sheer joy over the verdict and thanked his mother along with others who understood him and his sexuality.

Supreme Court strikes down Section 377 in a unanimous verdict on Thursday. CJI Dipak Misra says there is a consensus among the judgments, which means all the judges are in agreement on the criminalisation of Section 377. Homosexuality is not a mental disorder. It is a completely natural condition, the Supreme Court observed during the judgment of Section 377.

The apex court said that the society cannot dictate sexual relationship between consenting adults as it a private affair. Justice Chandrachud said that the denial of the right to sexual orientation is akin to denial of the right to privacy.
