Slugs Return From Capistrano Day is an annual holiday observed on May 28 in the United States. It increases awareness of slugs and their functions in our ecosystem. Slugs are believed to spend the winter in Capistrano. It is believed that they will return to our terraces and gardens during the holiday season. The majority of slug species are innocuous to humans. They can be agricultural and horticultural pests due to their tendency to consume plant foliage. They also consume fruits and vegetables before they can be harvested, causing crop destruction.
Ruth and Thomas Roy established the holiday. The concept was inspired by the fact that slugs migrate to Capistrano for the winter. The holiday signifies their springtime return to our gardens and terraces.
Slugs are essentially shellless crustaceans. There are various species of snails. Some snails inhabit land, while others inhabit water. Their diet consists of various animals and other substances.
It has been observed that slugs consume algae, nematodes, centipedes, insects, and fungi. They typically consume several times their body weight every day. Some snails are quite large. The ‘black sea hare’ is a species of mollusk that can grow up to 40 inches long and weigh up to 30 pounds. The ‘ashy-grey’ snail of Europe can reach a maximum length of 10 inches.
The tendrils of slugs are retractable. Two senses are used to see and scent. They utilise the others for texture and flavour. They breathe via a pore known as the ‘pneumostome.’ The mucus that slugs secrete protects them from pathogens and fungi. Mucus enables them to regulate their moisture levels. Additionally, the mucus makes it simpler for them to move around. When searching for a mate, slugs investigate the mucus trails left by other slugs. They use a gland in their pedals to produce mucus. Slugs are notoriously sluggish. Banana snails can travel approximately 6.5 inches per minute. In a single night, the’milky’ snail can travel up to 40 feet.
