Tax Season Unveiled: The Income Tax Department has added a new feature called “Discard” to Income Tax Returns (ITRs) made under sections 139(1), 139(4), and 139(5). This is meant to give people more freedom and convenience. From the tax year 2023–2024, this choice is available for reports that haven’t been checked.
Users who accidentally sent in wrong information when filing their ITRs can use the “Discard” choice to fix the problem. Instead of going through the time-consuming steps of verifying and then revising their return, taxpayers can now choose to throw away the one they originally filed and send in a revised one.
There are several steps to the process, such as sending the ITR, doing some checks to make sure it is correct, editing, and finally judging it. People can dispose of their ITRs before the Central Board of Direct Taxation (CBDT) verifies them. This lets them make a new ITR if they need to.

For example, if a user finds mistakes in the returns they sent in the first place, they can choose the “Discard” choice to avoid having to check incorrect information again. This new tool makes the process easier by letting people fix mistakes without having to file a new return after it has been checked.
People who have made original, revised, or late tax returns but haven’t been checked yet can use the “Discard” choice. After throwing away the return that wasn’t checked, they can file a new ITR with the right information.
For tax returns made after the financial year 2022–2023, you can choose to throw away ITRs. But people should know that they can only use this choice up to nine months after the start of the relevant fiscal year, which ends on December 31.
