Working Families Tax Refund: MARCA explains why your application for the Working Families Tax Credit, a new annual tax refund for Washington residents, may have been denied due to similar eligibility requirements as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
The quantity of the tax refund may range from $50 to $1,200, contingent upon fulfillment of eligibility criteria, including income and the number of qualifying children. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) users, including undocumented laborers, are also qualified to receive this benefit.
Applicants must submit their applications by December 31 of each year, after the completion of their federal income tax return.

What is the reason for the Washington Working Families Tax Refund delay?
2021 saw the passage and funding of the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) by the state legislature. It is anticipated that over 400,000 households will receive the tax credit, and one in every three children in the state will benefit from it. However, several factors could cause a delay in the application process and refund, should you not have received it yet.
The Washington State Department of Revenue provides the following as a list of potential causes for potential delays in the application procedure and refund:
- Insufficient or absent information: The processing of your application could be delayed if it contains any incorrect, incomplete, or absent information. Before applying, ensure that it is complete, that every section has been signed, and that the information is accurate.
- Paper check as opposed to direct deposit: The receipt of a paper check may take longer than that of a direct deposit refund. Checks that are mailed with rebates typically arrive between 5 and 7 business days after the rebate is mailed.
- Mailed application: The department will require a longer time to receive your completed paper application if you mail it to them.
- Multiple applications submitted: The application procedure will be significantly delayed if multiple applications are submitted.
- Documents in support: If your application or supporting materials are written in a language other than English, a translation will be required. This additional step may cause a delay of up to two weeks in the overall process.
Applications for the Working Families Tax Credit for the 2022 tax year will be accepted through December 31. If you have any inquiries regarding the status of your application, please contact the Working Families Tax Credit Helpline of the Treasury Department, available Monday through Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 at 360-763-7300.
