October 17 is World Trauma Day, a day to raise awareness of the global burden of trauma and to remember those who have been affected by it. In the past year, we have seen an increase in the number of people affected by trauma. whether it be from natural disasters, man-made disasters, or political violence. It is estimated that over 300 million people are affected by trauma each year. While there are many organizations and individuals working to help those affected by trauma, there is still much work to be done. On this World Trauma Day, let us remember those who have been affected by trauma and pledge to do our part in helping to heal the world.
World Trauma Day was created in New Delhi, India, in 2011. This was a result of the high number of deaths caused by road accidents in the country — an estimate of over 400 people lost their lives each day to it. The day was created to reduce injuries and deaths, as well as the after-effects of trauma incidents in the country and the world at large.

Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. It is an event or circumstance that causes intense physical and psychological stress. Trauma can be caused by natural disasters, man-made disasters, accidents, violence, war, or other events.
Road accidents are considered to be one of the most common causes of traumatic experiences around the world. Traumatic experiences from military operations, domestic abuse, and sexual assaults follow shortly behind. These experiences, if not handled properly, can result in victims suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (P.T.S.D.). According to accounts dating back to the 5th century, B.C. trauma was visible in Ancient Greece and was also reported among soldiers during the American Civil War in the 1860s.
