She stated that she “felt intimidated and scared” by “events unfolding on social media” and that she required some space and time to reflect, despite the fact that “there was no immediate threat to her or her family.”
Abbas participated in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 commentary panel, which commenced in Ahmedabad the previous week. In contrast to multiple media reports that claimed Abbas was expelled or even requested to leave India because of dubious social media posts in the past, those posts have resurfaced and sparked intense backlash on social media.
“I was not deported nor was I requested to vacate,” Abbas wrote in a statement published on the microblogging platform ‘X’ (previously referred to as Twitter). “However, I was terrified and intimidated by the online response that was unfolding.” While there was no imminent danger to my life, acquaintances and family members on both sides of the border expressed concern. I required some time and solitude to contemplate the events that had unfolded.

Additionally, she expressed regret for any offense caused by her previous social media posts. “I comprehend and profoundly lament the distress inflicted by the widely disseminated posts. It is imperative to specify that they do not reflect my present-day persona or values. “Such language has no place or justification, and I extend my sincerest apologies to all individuals who were offended,” the statement continued.
In the past, Abbas’ dubious tweets had gained widespread attention when, on October 5, a lawyer based in Delhi lodged a complaint against him with the cyber division of the Delhi Police. The lawyer requested a FIR under sections 153A, 295, 506, 121 IPC, and section 67 of the IT Act, alleging that Abbas had made anti-Hindu statements. The attorney, Vineet Jindal, also published an article on X in which she urged the BCCI secretary Jay Shah and the ICC to withdraw her from the ODI World Cup.
