XDefiant, a Call of Duty rival, has been postponed indefinitely.

XDefiant: The most recent setbacks in XDefiant’s release process—failed certifications that delayed the game’s planned platform release—appear to be another obstacle. The XDefiant team announced this week that it has opted to postpone the preseason of the game. As no new release date or window has been given for the game, the delay is currently indefinite. The team developing the game will use the additional time to resolve problems and “inconsistencies in the game experience,” according to the statement regarding the delay.

If you’ve been following the game’s development and the missed or unsure release windows along the way, the game’s indefinite delay shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. However, the delay couldn’t have come at a worse time for the game given that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is scheduled to be released next month. When XDefiant dropped that and showed off some amazing gameplay, people began to believe it could compete with Call of Duty itself. XDefiant had first drawn criticism for having Tom Clancy in the game’s name but not really playing like any of the other Tom Clancy games at all. It still might, but not debuting concurrently with or close to Modern Warfare 3 won’t make that difficult task any less difficult.

XDefiant Postponed, Statement Issued

In the typical image-on-text notification sent on social media Tuesday morning, the XDefiant team explained the delay. The developers found the “inconsistencies” after a period of intermittent testing of the game.

The release read, “Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent Public Test Session and continues to stand with us as we construct XDefiant. The PTS once more demonstrated how much you enjoy the fast-paced gunplay, distinctively designed maps, goal-oriented modes, and recognizable Faction roster we offer.

“But, it also revealed several irregularities in the gameplay that we must fix before starting our Preseason. Thus, we have decided to postpone the start of XDefiant’s preseason.”

The statement concluded by restating expectations that the new game will be a “best-in-class arcade shooter,” positioning it once more as a rival to Call of Duty. To put things in perspective, Call of Duty games typically fluctuate between feeling more or less arcade-like depending on whether Sledgehammer Games or Infinity Ward developed the multiplayer experience in the past. However, overall, Call of Duty games have a much more arcadey feel compared to other games like the Battlefield series and stricter military sims.

XDefiant’s latest delays have elicited a range of reactions, most of which have been unfavorable. Several outspoken critics demanded the game’s cancellation in replies to the tweet and said that Ubisoft had missed its opportunity due to the delay of XDefiant and the impending release of Modern Warfare 3. Some offered further encouragement, advising taking the time required to make the encounter what it ought to be.
