23.5 metric tonnes of Mandrax seized from Udaipur

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 23.5 tonnes of Mandrax tablets from Udaipur, Rajasthan. It is estimated to be largest seizure of this drug worldwide and its market value is pegged to be Rs 3000 crore.

Mandrax, also known as Methaqualone, is a depressant and party drug. Mandrax is a banned psychotropic substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.

Addressing a press conference, Central Board of Excise and Customs Chairman Najeeb Shah said that the tablets were primarily meant for the international market, mainly Mozambique and South Africa.

On October 28, 2016, a team of Revenue Intelligence officers raided the premises of M/s Marudhar Drinks in Udaipur on the basis of specific information. During the search, the officials detected a hidden room full of cartons of Mandrax tablets. It is estimated that it contained about 2 crore tablets.

The CBEC further said that the alleged mastermind Subhash Dudani has been arrested in Mumbai and sent to Udaipur in transit remand. Dudhani, who has produced Bollywood films, also had businesses and properties in Mumbai.
