Woman Dies After 9-Day Navratri Ritual: A 35-year old woman died due to chest pain she developed after performing a nine day Navrati ritual by keeping a kalash (sacred pot) on her chest for all nine days.

This tragic event occurred in the town of Triveniganj located in Bihar’s Supaul district. According to reports, the woman had been worshiping Goddess Durga at a temple throughout the festive occasion called Sharad Navratri.

Who Was the Woman Who Died After the Navratri Ritual?

After the completion of this Navratri ritual, the woman, identified as Sachita Devi, reportedly returned home on Tuesday, October 20. But from there onwards, the woman fell sick with deteriorating health and complained of chest pains the following morning.

Her family members then rushed the lady to the nearby hospital, Triveniganj Sub-Divisional Hospital, and found out about her demise.

The victim Sachita Devi (wife of Virendra Yadav) lives in Ward No. 4, Triveniganj Municipal Council area, Supaul district. According to media reports citing her family members, Sachita has been observed this ritual from the start of Navratri at the Badi Durga Temple complex in Triveniganj market.

What Did Doctors Say About Her Death?

She would observe this ritual for nine days while keeping a kalash on her chest as part of worship. After completing the ritual on Tuesday, she came back home. Her family members claimed that her health condition got worse overnight. Though there was some relief, after suffering from chest pains on Wednesday morning, they rushed to the hospital with her.

The doctors also reportedly concluded that dehydration was one possible explanation of her death, along with “a possible heart-related condition”.

However, the specific cause of her death hasn’t yet been officially confirmed, and there are no official reports which state that she died directly due to carrying out this ritual.

As such, we can’t conclude what the doctors thought about this specifically based on the above details. And ultimately, you can’t reach a medical conclusion purely on the basis of when an incident happened, further medical findings would be necessary to come to a conclusion about what caused a person’s death.

Can Prolonged Fasting and Physically Demanding Rituals Affect Health?

This incident draws attention to some of the dangers of prolonged fasting and physical exertion during religious activities. Extended periods without adequate food or fluids can lead to severe dehydration and imbalance of electrolytes, both of which pose significant health hazards.

Those who have pre-existing medical problems (including heart issues) are particularly at risk when undertaking lengthy fasts. Signs including chest pains, dizzy spells or uncharacteristic weakness call for immediate medical assistance. Those who experience difficulty in breathing while fasting should seek urgent evaluation from qualified professionals.

We encourage people to undertake religious observance with appropriate regard to their own health and to consult a medical professional if they experience concerning symptoms.
