The Supreme Court has granted bail to four convicts who were amongst 12 convicted in the Naroda Patiya massacre case.

A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar on Tuesday granted bail to the four convicts – Umeshbhai Surabhai Bharwad, Rajkumar, Padmendrasinh Jaswantsinh Rajput and Harshad alias Mungda Jila Govind Chhara Parmar.

On April 20, last year the Gujarat high court has acquitted 17 others among the 29 accused in the massacre. The remaining 12 were pronounced guilty on various charges by the trial court.

The massacre took place on February 28, 2002, in the Naroda Patiya area of Ahmedabad, where a mob attack has killed 97 people mainly from the minority community.

The massacre had taken place a day after the Sabarmati Express at Godhra was set ablaze, which had led to State-wide riots.
