4 killed, 6 injured after car rams into night shelter in Lucknow

Four labourers were killed and six others injured after a car crashed into a night shelter in Lucknow early this morning.

The deceased have been identified as Prithvi Raj, Nanku, Abdul and Gokharan. The four deceased were daily wage earners from Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. As per reports, four of the eight injured are in ‘critical’ condition and have been referred to the trauma center.

The incident took place at around 1:30 am in the morning, when around 80 labourers were sleeping inside the shelters.  “It was around 2 AM and suddenly a car came at a high speed and rammed into the night shelter. I saw three people inside. They were all drunk. Around 10 ambulances and the police came to the spot soon after,” an eyewitness told news agency ANI.

According to the police, the driver of the car, along with his four companions, was driving under influence.  The accused fled from the scene after the incident. Lucknow Police, however, were able to apprehend two of the five accused.

“The accused were drunk. Two of them have been arrested and car has also been seized,” Manzil Saini, SSP Lucknow said. She added that manhunt has been launched to nab other culprits.

One of the accused was reportedly son of former legislator Ashok Rawat while other is a son of businessman.
