$5108 Social Security: As May begins, retirees across the U.S. wait for their Social Security checks. These monthly payments help them manage basic needs like rent and groceries. For many, it’s their main support after leaving work.

How much money a retiree gets depends a lot on how much they earned while working and the age when they chose to stop working. If someone retires at age 62, they usually get about $2,831 every month. But if they wait and retire at 67, then they may receive around $3,822 monthly.

And if they hold off until they turn 70, they could get the highest monthly amount, which is about $5,108. This setup is meant to encourage people to keep working longer if they can, because they’ll get more money later on. But of course, not everyone can wait, so it depends on each person’s health and needs.

Apart from helping retired workers, the SSA also runs the SSI program, which gives monthly support to people who have serious disabilities and can’t work full-time. The money they get depends on things like how many people live in their house and where they live. In 2025, if someone lives alone and gets SSI, the highest they can get is $967 every month.

If two people who qualify are married and file together, they could get up to $1,450. There’s also something called the “essential person” benefit, for someone who helps take care of a person with a disability, and they can get up to $484 each month.

When will You Get Paid?

Not everyone gets paid on the same day. The SSA follows a fixed schedule to send out checks in an organized way. People who started getting their payments before May 1997 are part of a special group. They always receive their checks on the 3rd of each month. But since May 3, 2025, is a weekend, they’ll get their payment early, on Friday, May 2.

  • People born between 1st and 10th get their payment on the second Wednesday of the month.
  • People born between 11th and 20th get their payment on the third Wednesday.
  • People born between 21st and 31st receive their payment on the fourth Wednesday.
