The judiciary has finally permitted cameras in the courtrooms after years of reluctance.  The Supreme Court has ordered installation of CCTV cameras (without audio recording) in at least two districts in all states and union territories to capture court proceedings.

A bench of Justices Adarsh K Goel and Uday U Lalit ordered 24 high courts across the nation to ensure that the district and sessions courts in a minimum of two districts in each state and union territories have CCTV cameras installed inside courtrooms.

The SC has allowed three months of the period for the task. The order has come after several rounds of deliberations between the Centre and the Apex Court.

The union law ministers have written to the then Chief Justices of India at least thrice since August 2013, to consider recording the court proceedings. The request was aimed at bringing transparency and better case management.
