Pranab Mukherjee, the 13th President of India continues to be on ventilator support after undergoing brain surgery at Army’s Research and Referral (R&R) hospital on August 10.
The former President underwent the surgery to remove a clot in his brain after he suffered a fall at his Rajaji Marg residence and he has been in a coma since then. He had been tested positive for COVID-19 as well.
Doctors attending on him said that his “vital and clinical parameters” are stable and he is being closely monitored. According to Mukherjee’s family, there has been a slight improvement in his health ever since he was operated upon.

The former President of India belongs to a Kullin Brahmin family. His father, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee, was a freedom fighter and later became a representative of the Indian National Congress and a member of the All India Congress Committee. From 1952 to 1964 Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was a West Bengal Legislative Council member. Mukherjee’s mother, Rajlakshmi Mukherjee, was also a freedom fighter and actively participated in India’s independent movement.
Pranab Mukherjee has 4 sisters, Annapurna Banerjee, Krishna Mukherjee, Jharna, and Swagata Das Mukherjee. His elder brother, Pijush Mukherjee, passes away on October 20, 2017.
The ex-President was married on July 13, 1957, to Surva Mukherjee who succumbed to heart ailments on August 18, 2015. They had two sons- Abhijit Mukherjee, and Indrajit Mukherjee, and a daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee.
Abhijit Mukherjee:
Abhijit Mukherjee is an Indian politician who served as Member of Parliament from the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency in the Indian state of West Bengal. He is a member of the Indian National Congress.
He also worked as a corporate executive for firms like the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Maruti Udyog Limited, Steel Authority of India Limited, and was the General Manager in charge of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Steel Authority of India Limited before he entered into politics under INC’s banner in 2011.
Sharmistha Mukherjee:
The only daughter of Pranab Mukherjee, Sharmistha Mukherjee is an Indian Kathak dancer, choreographer, and politician of the Indian National Congress. She contested the Delhi Assembly election in February 2015 from the Greater Kailash constituency but lost, coming third with 6,102 votes after Saurabh Bharadwaj.
On August 15, she shared some old pictures of the former president taking part in Independence Day celebrations.
