JioHotstar: What the Merger Means for Users, Subscriptions rates, and Content Strategy

New Delhi, April 28, 2025: India’s streaming landscape is evolving rapidly, with new data from JustWatch revealing significant shifts in platform popularity for the first quarter of 2025. According to the report, JioHotstar has claimed the top spot, securing a 26% market share, narrowly ahead of Amazon Prime Video, which captured 24%.

Netflix also made notable gains this quarter, increasing its market share by 2% to solidify its third-place position with 17%. Apple TV+ and ZEE5 rounded out the top five, with 12% and 11% shares respectively. Together, the top five platforms accounted for an overwhelming 90% of total streaming demand in India during the period.

The findings are based on JustWatch’s tracking of over 60 million monthly users globally, including several million active viewers in India. The data highlights how competition among leading SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) services remains intense, with minor but crucial fluctuations influencing the broader market.

The accompanying charts show that JioHotstar maintained a steady lead throughout January to March 2025, while Prime Video trailed closely behind. Netflix’s gradual growth signals strengthening consumer engagement, possibly driven by its expanding regional and original content offerings.

Meanwhile, Apple TV+ saw stable performance, benefiting from a curated catalog of premium content. ZEE5 also held its ground, continuing to appeal to India’s regional audiences. SonyLIV and other niche platforms together accounted for the remaining 13% of the market, indicating a relatively fragmented space beyond the leading players.

As India’s streaming wars heat up, the focus remains on how platforms innovate with content, pricing, and partnerships to attract and retain viewers in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
