UG Admissions in Bengal: Undergraduate admissions in West Bengal’s government and government-aided colleges are expected to begin before June 19. The future of 4,82,948 students who took the Higher Secondary exams in Bengal is still unclear, as UG admissions through the Centralised Admission Portal to about 460 state colleges remain on hold.

State education minister Bratya Basu shared this news while speaking in the Assembly. He said there has been no delay in starting the admission process and reminded everyone that the central admission portal had opened on the same date last year too. He said the state plans to begin the admission work following the UGC academic calendar and that they hope things will move ahead on time this year too.

But this news came only after a lot of concern from college principals and teachers across West Bengal. Many were getting worried because the Class 12 board results came out more than a month ago, yet the online admission portal for state-run colleges has not opened.

Some top colleges like St Xavier’s College in Park Street, St Xavier’s University in New Town, and Scottish Church College have already released their first merit lists. Other colleges, like the Ramakrishna Mission Residential College in Narendrapur and the Centenary College in Rahara, were planning to hold their entrance exams before the government portal even opened.

Losing Bright Students

Heads of various state colleges say that if the portal opened earlier, many students would have already completed their first round of admissions. Some are scared that students might leave for private colleges or even out-of-state colleges because they don’t want to wait any longer.

The English department of Jadavpur University raised serious concerns, saying they might lose good students to colleges that started their admissions early. Navin Poudyal, the principal of Pedong Government College in Darjeeling, said that students might now look at places like Sikkim for admissions. He said the first round of admissions would have been over if the portal had opened when it should have.

Doyeeta Majumder, a teacher in the English department who attended the meeting, said the loss would be the university’s. “The delay in starting admissions is a matter of concern, as we are missing out on bright students. They are not only leaving the state for colleges outside, but applying to other colleges in the city” reported Telegraph.

OBC Policy Confusion

One major reason behind this delay is the confusion around the OBC reservation policy in the state. Last year, the Calcutta High Court rejected the state’s earlier formula for OBC reservations. After that, the state made changes and came up with a revised version.

But that new formula has not yet been cleared by the Supreme Court, which is still looking at the matter. Even though the state cabinet approved the new reservation rules just last week, many people are asking why the government didn’t move faster earlier. Because of this, Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) passed a resolution during a meeting on June 2. They have asked the university to begin UG, PG, and PhD admissions without waiting anymore.
