A selfless auto driver drowns in Yamuna while rescuing mother-child attempting suicide

A heroic selfless auto driver lost his own life amid his efforts to save a mother who attempted suicide holding her child in arms at the Yamuna bridge edge.

The incident took place on Sunday morning when the auto driver Pawan Shah spotted a woman standing on the edge of a bridge on the Meethapur canal in Delhi. She had a child in her arms. Within no time, Shah saw the lady jump-off the bridge. Without a second thought, Shah jumped into the icy water in a bid to save the mother and her child.

Observing Shah struggling in the water to keep the woman and her child’s head above, the passer-bys Rajeev, Sanjeev and Jamil formed a human chain and managed to bring the child as well as the woman ashore.

However, before the men could reach out to a tired Shah and drag him to safety, a strong current had taken him away.

A PCR call was made and police teams from Jaitpur joined the search. They looked for Shah on boats while divers searched underwater but the auto driver couldn’t be found. He is now presumed dead.

The rescued woman and her son were taken to hospital where they have been declared out of danger. The woman told counsellors that she had tried to kill herself and her son after a fight with her husband the previous night.
