Aadhaar Address Change: Many people find it hard to change the address in Aadhaar because they do not have papers in their own name. Things like a utility bill, rent paper, or other address proof are not always available. This becomes a problem because Aadhaar is used in many places now, like banks, government schemes, and identity checks.

To make this easier, UIDAI has given a way to update the address online with help from the Head of Family, also called HoF. In this method, the person does not need personal address proof if the family head agrees to share the address.

How the Head of Family method works?

The process starts on the UIDAI portal. The person has to log in and choose the option called “Head of Family-based Address Update” in the address update section. After that, the Aadhaar number of the Head of Family has to be entered. UIDAI says this is done in a privacy-safe way, so extra personal details of the HoF are not shown on the screen.

Then the applicant has to upload a document that shows the relation with the Head of Family. Documents like a ration card, marriage certificate, passport, or mark sheet can be used for this step. After uploading the document, the person has to pay Rs. 50 online. Once the payment is done, a Service Request Number, called SRN, is created so the request can be tracked later.

Steps people need to follow

The steps are simple, but they must be done carefully.

  • Log in to the UIDAI or myAadhaar portal and open the address update section. Then choose the “Head of Family-based Address Update” option.
  • Enter the Aadhaar number of the Head of Family. After that, upload a document that proves the relation between the applicant and the HoF.
  • Pay the Rs. 50 fee online. After payment, the system gives an SRN so the request can be checked later.
  • The Head of Family gets an SMS and has to log in and approve or reject the request.

Approval from HoF is Necessary

The update does not finish just because the request was submitted. The Head of Family must approve it. UIDAI says the HoF gets a message and has to give consent through the portal within 30 days. If the HoF says no, or if no action is taken in those 30 days, the request gets cancelled automatically. This part is important because the Rs. 50 fee is not refunded if the request ends like that. So the approval has to come on time.

If there is No Proof of Relationship

Some people may not have a document that shows the relation with the Head of Family. For such cases, UIDAI also allows a self-declaration by the HoF. In that form, the Head of Family confirms the relationship and agrees to share the address for Aadhaar update. UIDAI’s document list shows that this self-declaration can be used for HoF-based address update, and it is valid for this purpose.
