Air India chairman, Ashwani Lohani, has been made the new Railway Board chief, following AK Mittal’s resignation on Wednesday.  Mittal was facing severe criticism following the Utkal Express derailment in Muzaffarnagar and the Kaifiyat Express derailment.

“The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Ashwani Lohani, the CMD of Air India, as the new Chairman of Railway Board,” an official statement from the government read.

Railways minister, Suresh Prabhu, had directed the railway board chairman to fix responsibility after the Muzaffarnagar incident. The minister had added that he will not allow laxity in operations by the Railway Board.
“Will not allow laxity in operations by the (Railways) Board. I have directed CRB to fix responsibility on prima facie evidence by end of day,” Prabhu had said in a tweet.
Lohani is an IRSME-cadre officer, who has previously served as DRM, Delhi division; director, National Rail Museum; and chief administrative officer, Rail Alternate Fuel. He holds the Guinness Record for successfully running the ‘Fairy Queen Express’, the world’s oldest working steam locomotive.
