Hearing on review plea for the recall of Sabarimala verdict on Nov 13
Ayyappa Temple, Sabarimala

The Kerala government on Monday said to the Supreme Court that women of all age groups should be allowed inside the sanctum sanctorum of Sabarimala temple.

Following this, the court posted the next hearing in the matter for February 20.

Earlier,Kerala Devaswam Minister Kadakampally Surendran had in June said that the LDF government was ready for a referendum on the entry of women into Sabarimala temple.

For centuries, women between 10 to 50 years have not been allowed to Sabarimala temple. Some says that they are not allowed due to menstrual reasons but others said the ban was imposed because Lord Ayyappa, to whom the temple is dedicated to’ is considered a celibate yogi.

Last year, there was an outrage when the Sabarimala Devaswam Board chief had said women will be allowed inside the temple when a machine is invented to detect menstruation.

The LDF government had in 2007 said that women should not be stopped from entering the temple, but the 2011 Congress-led UDF government’s stand was in favour to the restriction on women’s entry.

The Supreme Court had said that restricting the entry of women to a public religious place is a violation of rights.
