Tension simmered in Jharkhand’s Palamu district on Tuesday after a newly installed bust of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was found missing, prompting angry locals to block a key road for over eight hours.
The bust, installed just a day earlier in Kharadpar village to mark Ambedkar Jayanti, was discovered stolen early Tuesday morning. Residents quickly mobilized and staged a blockade on the Japla-Chatarpur road, a critical connector in the area. Traffic, including school buses and emergency vehicles, was affected until late afternoon.
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, regarded as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a towering icon for Dalit communities and marginalized groups, remains a deeply symbolic figure in Indian public life. The theft of his bust triggered immediate outrage among locals who saw the act not just as vandalism but as an affront to Ambedkar’s legacy and what he represents.
Police officials, including Officer-in-Charge of Hussainabad police station Sonu Kumar Choudhary, reached the protest site along with district administration officers to defuse the situation. “We’ve launched a search operation and are treating the case with urgency,” Choudhary told Newsd.in. “We are also examining local disputes related to the land where the bust was placed.”
According to officials, there had been a prior disagreement between two community groups regarding the nature of the land—whether it was public or private—on which the bust had been erected. This dispute is now a key angle in the ongoing investigation. Circle Officer Pankaj Kumar has been assigned to verify land ownership records.
The bust had been installed without a formal government unveiling, which may have contributed to the confusion around land use permissions.
Leaders from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), including Ajay Bharti and Mandeep Ram, visited the site and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved. “This is not just theft. It’s an attempt to erase Babasaheb’s ideals from public memory,” said Bharti. “The bust must be reinstated at the same spot, without compromise.”
By evening, following repeated assurances from the administration, protestors lifted the road blockade. However, the incident has left an undercurrent of unease in the area, with many demanding round-the-clock monitoring of Ambedkar statues and public memorials.
This isn’t an isolated case. In recent years, similar incidents involving the desecration or removal of Ambedkar statues have flared up across India, often leading to communal or caste-based tensions. In many cases, these episodes highlight not just gaps in law enforcement but deeper unresolved issues around land, local power dynamics, and caste identity in rural India.
For now, the bust remains missing and no arrests have been made. Authorities have said they will review CCTV footage and continue ground-level inquiries in the surrounding villages.
