Ambedkar Jayanthi is observed annually in India on April 14. The commemoration honours the life of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a renowned polymath, jurist, economist, and civil rights activist. He is affectionately referred to as the “Father of the Indian Constitution” and was instrumental in establishing India’s democratic structure. He devoted himself to educating the subjugated, enhancing their economic standing, and bringing attention to issues of economic and social discrimination against untouchables. His birthday is celebrated annually on April 14 as Ambedkar Jayanti. The day is also celebrated nationwide as Equality Day.

HISTORY OF AMBEDKAR JAYANTI

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born in India on April 14th, 1891. He is regarded as the Father of India’s constitution. It was his rejection of Hinduism that inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement. Ambedkar served as chairman of the Constitution of India drafting committee and Minister of Law and Justice in Jawaharlal Nehru’s first ministry from 1947 to 1951.

In 1918, he was designated Political Economy Professor at Mumbai’s Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics. He was appointed to the Bombay Presidency Committee in 1925 in order to collaborate with the all-European Simon Commission. During this time, Ambedkar drafted a distinct set of constitutional recommendations. Ambedkar decided to commence anti-untouchability campaigns in 1927. He began by organising public demonstrations and marches in an effort to expand access to public potable water resources. He also began a campaign for access to Hindu temples.

After India achieved independence in October 1947, the new Congress-led government invited Ambedkar to serve as the nation’s first Minister of Law, a position he accepted. The Assembly appointed him chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee on August 29, and tasked him with drafting India’s new constitution. Throughout his life, Ambedkar advocated for equality, especially for women and socially disadvantaged strata. Several constitutional provisions reflect his vision of equal rights for all. On April 14, 1928, activist Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay held a public birthday party for Ambedkar in Pune. This date is now referred to as “Ambedkar Jayanti.”
