‘Amma Free Wi-Fi’ zones to come up in Tamil Nadu

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Friday announced ‘Amma Free Wi-Fi’ to be set up in 50 locations across Tamil Nadu. Free internet facilities will initially be provided in 50 schools at a cost of Rs 10 crore. A further Rs 1.5 crore has been allocated as annual expenditure to maintain the facilities. This is in line with the State government’s announcement to provide internet facilities in high schools and colleges, the Hindu reported.

“In a move to implement the Free Wi-Fi zone scheme as announced in the party manifesto, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa issued orders to set up Amma Wi-Fi zone in 50 spots, including larger bus terminuses, commercial complexes and parks,” a release from the Chief Minister’s office said.

Furthermore, a 50-seat entrepreneurship development centre will be set up in Coimbatore in a rented facility at Tidel Park. The IT industry body, NASSCOM will be a knowledge partner for this centre.

Jayalalithaa has also issued orders to construct an integrated IT complex, spread across two lakh square feet at the Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu Special Economic Zone in Sholinganallur at a cost of Rs 80 crore.
