Anitha Kumaraswamy becomes first woman MLA from Ramanagara

The much anticipated Karnataka by-polls, which provided a boost to incumbent JDS- Congress coalition. Bypolls in Ramnagara assembly, where the wife of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Anitha Kumaraswamy, who contested under the banner of JDS-Congress coalition won by a big margin of 1.05 lakh votes. Anitha Kumaraswamy is the first woman MLA from Ramanagara constituency. As per the seat-sharing agreement between Congress and JDS, Ramnagara was given to Janta Dal Secular after HD Kumaraswamy decided to resign. Earlier in 2008, Anitha had contested from Madhugiri assembly by-polls and defeated BJP’s Chennigappa in a tough battle.

BJP provided a walkover for Anitha Kumaraswamy

In a major setback for the Bhartiya Janta Party, its contestant L Chandrashekhar, son of a Congress MLC, quitted the saffron party just two days before the voting. After joining the Congress, Chandrashekhar said that BJP’s top leadership’s was reluctant towards campaigning for me in the constituency. However, Anitha was a clear favourite in the old Mysuru region where BJP has no grassroots presence.

Apart from being a politician, Anitha is a businesswoman and owns a news channel, film production houses and a petrol pump.
