Another flyover collapse in Bengal: Will the state ever learn?

It’s not even been a year that a flyover in Kolkata’s Burrabazar area collapsed earlier this year and another incident of an under-construction flyover being collapsed in Bengal’s Hooghly district came into the light. The incident is a clear reflection that no lessons have been learnt from the past incident that claimed around 27 lives and injured several others.

On Sunday morning at around 9.30 am, a fraction of the flyover in Hooghly’s Mogra collapsed.  Fortunately, while the accident did not hurt anyone, a truck was stuck beneath the collapsed part of the flyover. The driver was not present in the truck at the time the incident took place.

Post the accident, the railway officials rushed to the location to take stock of the situation.  Police then carried out a search operation to check whether anyone or any other vehicles were stuck under the debris.

The locals alleged that the railway authorities did not take sufficient security measures while constructing the flyover.

“A major tragedy has been averted. This is a very densely populated area. Luckily, the collapse took place on a Sunday morning; hence there were no people underneath. Had it been a working day, several would had been left dead,” said Dibyendu Malakar, a local, as per a report in DNA.

Following the incident, a committee of experts and engineers has been set up to investigate into the collapse flyover and discover the cause of the collapse.

In March this year, a section of another under construction flyover in Kolkata’s Jorasanko area collapsed. The incident took lives of around 27 people with several others being injured.

Later, three FIRs were registered against IVRCL – the company responsible for the construction of the flyover by the Kolkata Police. Some officials of the IVRCL were also detained by the Kolkata Police.
