Giving a room for improvement to the ‘anti-Romeo’ squad introduced by the new government, BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi on Saturday said that women constables must be a part of the team and they should have the complete freedom to deal with men who involve themselves in such mischiefs.

Lekhi, referring to the problem of eve-teasing said that it tampers te basic right of a woman and makes it uncomfortable and unsafe for her while she also ends up losing her fundamental right to even walk freely on the road.

“There is a section of males who stop women from doing even the most basic of things. If you ask any girl, she will want to live life on her own terms without any unnecessary obstruction. So, the anti-Romeo squad is for that. I feel women constables should be recruited in this squad, which should be named ‘Juliet squad’ and they should have full freedom to deal with men who resort to mischief,” she said.

This response comes right after UP CM Yogi Adityanath ordered for the safety of women in the state followed by which there was an ‘anti-romeo’ squad, in function from Wednesday to catch hold of eve-teasers at public places.

When the television footage of the ‘anti-romeo’ squad started to indicate unnecessary harassment of young couples in some places, CM Yogi Adityanath on Saturday asked officials to ensure there was no “unnecessary harassment”. The Chief Minister asked the Principal Secretary (Home) to clear out specific guidelines for the powers and functioning of the squad to make sure that there is so harassment.
