APCLC files petition to declare Maoist encounter at Malkangri illegal

Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee(APCLC) on Monday iled a petition with Hyderabad High Court, to declare the killing of 24 maoists in an encounter by combined operation of Andhra Police and Odisha Police as, illegal.

APCLC counsel Raghunath questioned authorities over why culpable homicide cases should not be registered against cops who participated in the encounter. He also said that the authorities are acting in an unconstitutional manner and that the bodies were not handed over to the relatives.

The High Court in its response, directed the Andhra and Telangana states to preserve the body of the killed Maoists till October 27 and posted the case on Thursday.

On Monday morning, 24 members of the banned CPI(maoist) group, including 8 woman, were killed in an encounter near Jantri in Malkangri district of Odisha, a few kilometer away from the border with Andhra Pradesh.

This is the second major encounter happened in Malkangri district. Thirteen Maoists were killed in an encounter with the police in September 2013 in Podia block in Malkangiri district.
