Assam: BJP Leader's bus torched in Morigaon

Gauhati: Some unidentified miscreants torched a Bharatiya Janata Party leader’s bus in Assam’s Morigaon in later night hours of Tuesday. This came at a time when protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 were going on across Assam.

The incident took place in the Mayong area in the central Assam district. Ram Prasad Sarkar, who is the owner of the bus, is the general secretary of BJP’s Morigaon district unit.

According to reports, the bus was parked on a road just in front of the BJP leader residence. Ram Prasad Sarkar’s younger brother said that they heard some sound at around 1.25 am and when they came outside they found the bus was on fire.

Ram Prasad Sarkar’s brother said “We and some locals had tried to douse the flames. We don’t know the reason behind it. Local police have now come and the reason will be found out after police investigation,” The police investigation is going on.

CAA protests have rocked several parts of Assam after the Citizenship Amendment act came into being enacted by the Parliament. Several parts of the North East have seen widespread protest against the bill, the reasoning behind it is that it might affect the demography present in the Northeastern states. And the original inhabitants might be reduced to a minority.

Significant changes have occurred amidst such rocky protests, at least 5 students have been killed and student organisations like AASU and NESO leaders providing statements of condemnation to govt.
