AUO, a leading provider of display technologies, has made significant advancements in the creation of displays of the next generation. AUO Chairman Peng Shuanglang revealed in a recent announcement that the company will begin mass production of MicroLED displays this year, with plans to integrate them into wearable devices. Mini LED backlights, which are already standard in high-end televisions and widely used in gaming and automobile displays, have also experienced an increase in popularity.

According to Shuanglang, AUO’s LED display has already surpassed 100 million yuan in sales, with a growth rate expected to be several times that amount over the coming years. In addition to its own research and development efforts, AUO has partnered with ecosystem partners to expand its capabilities. AUO displayed the Mini LED backlight technology in a smart cockpit display at this year’s CES, which received an overwhelmingly positive response.

Assuring consistent output across millions of individual LEDs is one of the primary challenges of MicroLED display production. Even with high yields, there may be some defective LEDs. To combat this, chip manufacturers must identify faulty LEDs and modify the transfer process. Shuanglang remarked that AUO has its own ecological chain for the crucial mass transfer technology of MicroLED, which enables the company to produce commercially viable products.

Future plans for AUO include incorporating MicroLED technology into televisions and automobiles. Given the trend towards automation and intelligence, Shuanglang emphasised that the demand for intelligent windscreens in automobiles is particularly strong. Chen Jianbin, Senior Vice President of AUO’s Display Strategic Business Group, stated that more than half of the automotive displays AUO is currently developing are barebone (partially assembled) orders, which is anticipated to significantly boost future operations.

In the next two to three years, Jianbin anticipates that AUO’s two technology platforms, AmLED and FIDM, will contribute more than fifty percent of the automotive revenue growth space. AUO will continue to prioritise high-end production capacity and make strategic capital expenditures to meet short-, medium-, and long-term development needs as the company prepares for MicroLED mass production.

AUO has also demonstrated MicroLED displays that can be applied to automobile windscreens and side windows. The displays’ high brightness and penetrability make them an attractive option for future windows of self-driving cars. With its innovative display technologies and strategic alliances, AUO is positioned to remain an industry leader for the foreseeable future.
