Balraj Sahni 50th Death Anniversary: Today marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Balraj Sahni, a highly accomplished and renowned actor of his time. In addition to his films, he is also remembered for his social concerns. He was born in Rawalpindi, Punjab province, British India, on May 1, 1913. Lahore University awarded him a master’s degree in English Literature. Following this, he travelled to Rawalpindi to manage his family’s business. He worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi in 1938. He then moved to England to work for BBC London Hindi.
Acting debut
Balraj Sahni has always had a passion for acting. His acting career began at the Indian People’s Theatre. 1946’s “Insaaf” marked the debut of his Bollywood career. The following year, he appeared in films such as “Dharti Ke Lal” and “Door Chalen.” His 1953 film, Do Bigha Zameen, is still remembered today. This film garnered the Cannes Film Festival’s International Award. In 1961, he appeared in the film Kabuliwala, which left an indelible impression.
Went to prison to bring the character to life:
To bring his personas to life, Balraj Sahni lived in character. K. Asif gave Balraj the character of a jailer in the film Halchal at Dilip Kumar’s request of Asif desired to bring this role to life, so he conferred with jail administration leaders and officials. Balraj Sahni also desired that his character be remembered everywhere. Because of this, they reached Hokie Arthur Jail Road and learned about the prisoners’ living conditions. It was roughly 1949.

When he really has to go to jail:
In 1949, Balraj Sahni was employed in the preparation of Balwant Gargi’s play “Signalman.” During the rehearsal, he learned that a Communist Party procession was scheduled to begin in Parel. Balraj Sahni, a supporter of Marxist ideology, and his wife joined the procession. Meanwhile, violence broke out. Balraj Sahni was detained alongside numerous others. He was incarcerated in Bareilly. Two months later, he was transferred to Arthur Road Jail. One day, the jailer summoned him and informed him that he had been spotted. At that moment, Asif was also seated there. On Asif’s request, the jailer granted him permission to fire while incarcerated. He would leave in the morning for hunting and return in the evening. After serving roughly three months in prison, he filmed the film Halchal.

Writing was a passion:
Balraj Sahni enjoyed composing as well. He wrote extensively in Hindi, English, and Punjabi. After visiting Pakistan in 1960, he also authored the book My Pakistani Journey. He visited numerous countries and also authored a book. The younger sibling of Balraj Sahni, Bhishma Sahni, is a well-known Hindi writer.
Famous films:
As a matter of fact, Balraj Sahni specialised in entirely immersing himself in his characters. His prominent films include ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, ‘Garam Hawa’, ‘Kabuli Wala’, ‘Lajwanti’, ‘Haqeeqat’, ‘Dharti Ke Lal’, ‘Waqt’ and ‘Do Raaste’.
On April 13, 1973, he perished of a heart attack.
