BBMP polls 2023: On Saturday, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy announced that Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council elections will be conducted in December. Friday, the state government ordered the formation of new committees to redistrict BBMP wards.

“The previous committee’s findings have been challenged in court. The previous committee proceeded with gerrymandering in order to accommodate those in power at the time. And let no one forget that they did all of this after their allotted time had expired and the legitimacy of the committee was in question,” Reddy told TNSE.

He stated, “Although the delimitation commission was established on January 29, 2021 for a six-month term, the report was submitted on June 23, 2022. This was approximately eleven months after the commission’s term ended. On July 6, a committee was established to examine objections.

Reddy stated, “The High Court judge stated that there was no legally constituted delimitation commission and that the commission’s term was extended after the fact, which is illegal.” According to him, the notification was issued improperly on July 14.

“The previous administration determined the number of constituencies before forming the delimitation commission. This is the responsibility of the delimitation commission,” he continued. He stated, “The High Court also noted a clear deviation of 12 percent, a violation of the rules.”
