Silchar: The Election Commission of India (ECI) released a draught proposal for the redistricting of Assam’s Legislative and Parliamentary constituencies. In the meantime, the proposed delimitation has elicited significant reactions from political and social platforms throughout the Barak Valley.

The Barak Democratic Front (BDF) leadership informed the media on Friday that they have decided to call for a 12-hour Barak Bandh on June 30 in protest against the move for delimitation, which, according to them, will be disastrous for the socio-political future of southern Assam districts.

BDF chief convener Pradip Dutta Roy, while briefing the media on the bandh call, stated that in the larger interest of the residents of this region, the BDF has decided to call for a 12-hour bandh. “The discontent of BJP leaders over the elimination of two assembly seats from Barak Valley and the reservation of the Silchar Lok Sabha seat indicates that the draught delimitation proposal must be protested. We share the same sentiment for the common cause, and through the bandh, we hope that the discontent of the electorate in this region will be heard on a broader scale. Since Barak Valley residents cannot file individual objections to the draught delimitation process with the ECI, we have urged the bandh to oppose the draught delimitation and demonstrate widespread discontent. The BDF will file an objection with the ECI regarding the issue of delimitation, according to the BDF’s principal convener.
