The suspect behind the truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin that killed 12 people has been identified as Naveed B, a 23-year-old Pakistani asylum seeker.

According to German media, the suspect was picked up about 2 kilometres (1½ miles) away from the scene of the attack in which 48 people were injured.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Christmas market carnage was ‘terrorist act’ likely committed by asylum seeker.

The suspect came to Germany as a refugee in February 2016, DPA news agency reported.

A Polish man, who was believed to be the registered driver of the truck, was found dead on the passenger seat. German Police assumed that the truck was stolen from a construction site in Poland.

The crash occurred outside the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the city’s center. Reportedly, the crowd was of tourists and locals who were enjoying shopping and the traditional festive atmosphere.

Police said the incident was similar to the attack in Nice where 86 people where killed by a truck driven by a terrorist inspired by ISIS ideology.
