Bhutan National Day 2023: Modern Bhutan grandly celebrates Bhutan National Day on December 17. Preparations are already underway at the Changlimithang Stadium for December 17, as has been the case in prior years. Are you aware that the Bhutan National Holiday was established in 1907? The occasion marks the coronation of Ugyen Wangchuck, the inaugural Druk Gyalpo and the first monarch of Bhutan. This is the reason why his statue is carried in festive processions.

Bhutan National Day History

Early in the 17th century, the Buddhist priest Ngawang Namgyal led Bhutan’s initial unification. Ngawang Namgyal presided over Bhutan’s Zhabdrung (reincarnations of the mind, body, and speech) dual system of government during that time. In the late 19th century, divergent perspectives emerged between the British dominion and the Tibetans regarding the ideal form of governance for Bhutan. As a consequence, hostilities erupted between the British Empire and Tibet.

Bhutanese regional leaders initiated a struggle for authority. This distinguished Ugyen Wangchuck, the Ponlop of Tongsa in the center of Bhutan. He fostered national unity and improved relations with the British Empire in India. Upon assuming power in Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck sparked a gathering of government officials and religious leaders where a consensus was reached to eliminate the dual system of governance that had been in place for the previous three centuries and replace it with an entirely new system. In the end, they opted for monarchy and selected Ugyen Wangchuck as their monarch.

The inaugural coronation of King Druk Gyalpo Ugyen Wangchuck took place on December 17, 1907. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of the Wangchuck dynasty, which continues to rule at present. The official designation bestowed upon the Bhutanese chief of state is Druk Gyalpo. “Dragon King” is its Dzongkha translation. Bhutan is also referred to as “The Land of the Thunder Dragon” about the mythical dragon Druk, which serves as the country’s emblem. In contrast to the Tshechu holidays, which are observed at the local level in Bhutan, the national holiday is observed at the country level and all operations, including those of government agencies, are suspended. This makes it the most important holiday in Bhutan.
