The unfortunate incident happened at Batura government school in Aurangabad district of Bihar. The accused school principal not only stopped Dalit widow Urmila from distributing food prepared by her, but also removed her from school duty. Urmila lodged a complaint with DM Kanwal Tanuj, upon which he acted swiftly and probed the matter.
Urmila, who lives in the Aurangabad district, says she was fired by the school principal three years ago after she lost her husband. she was allegedly told that as a Dalit widow, she would not be allowed to cook the mid-day meal that all governments schools are obliged to offer to students.
Tanuj visited the school to investigate the matter on the spot. After finding allegations by the accused to be true, he suspended the principal and restored services of Urmila. He even shared the food prepared by Urmila. By his action, the DM has set an example for the society that is still ridden by the social evils.
DM Tanuj has ordered to investigate all similar incidents happened before in the district and take necessary steps to restore the victims whose only fault may be that they were Dalits.
In a similar incident last year Begusarai DM shared food prepared a widow to prove to villagers that a widowed cook cannot be bad a omen.
