Bharat Tiwari Encounter Case: A Bihar Special Task Force constable has been arrested in the death case of 28-year-old Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, who was killed in a police encounter in Bhojpur district last month. This is the first arrest of a policeman in a case that has become a big political issue in the state. Bhojpur SP Raj confirmed that STF constable Akshay Kumar was arrested in Ara, and said the investigation is still going on.
Police sources said the arrest came after a committee monitored by a DIG looked into the incident. That inquiry was started after Tiwari’s family said the encounter was staged. The probe reportedly found that the constable used excessive force against Tiwari. One officer said that “The constable was found to have fired three bullets into Tiwari’s leg,” which is now a key point in the case.

What Happened in Bilauti Village
The encounter took place on June 17 after a two-day stand-off in Bilauti village. Before the shooting, Tiwari went live on Facebook and spoke about giving up his weapon if his demands were met. He said, “Mange poori ki jayengi to mujhe shastra niche dalne mein koi samasya nahi hai (If the demands are fulfilled, I have no problem laying down my weapon)”.
He also added, “Hathiyar inko de diya gaya hai (The weapon has been given to them)”, and then fired one shot in the air before throwing his pistol toward the police. The livestream ended soon after that.
Police have said Tiwari may have tried to snatch a policeman’s weapon. They have also rejected the family’s claim that he was shot five separate times, saying the post-mortem counted entry and exit wounds separately. According to an officer, three bullets caused five wounds because two passed through the leg and another caused internal damage near the groin, leading to heavy bleeding.

Political Heat and Further Probe
The case has turned into a major political storm in Bihar. Murder charges were filed against the Jagdishpur Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Shahpur Station House Officer on June 22. One of the policemen was suspended and the SDPO was transferred. The state has also set up a one-member judicial commission headed by retired High Court judge Justice Vinod Kumar Sinha to look into the matter independently.
Tiwari’s family has kept pressing for justice, while police say the case is still under legal review. The arrest of the STF constable has added a new turn to a case that is still being closely watched across Bihar.
