Lucknow: The BJP and the Samajwadi Party on Wednesday cancelled their political programmes in Uttar Pradesh following the sudden death of Prateek Yadav, younger son of late SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and stepbrother of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Prateek Yadav, 38, fell ill and was taken to the Civil Hospital in Lucknow in the early hours of Wednesday, where doctors declared him dead.

The BJP said district-level protests planned by women workers across the state on Wednesday have been postponed following Prateek Yadav’s demise.

According to a statement issued by the party, Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary directed that the programmes be deferred in view of the untimely death of Prateek Yadav, husband of BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh State Women Commission vice-chairperson Aparna Yadav.

The Samajwadi Party has also cancelled its scheduled political engagements for the day.

Party sources said programmes involving Akhilesh Yadav, his wife and party MP Dimple Yadav, senior SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav and other office-bearers were called off following the bereavement in the Yadav family.

While Prateek Yadav hailed from the political family of Mulayam Singh Yadav, he was not involved in active politics. His wife Aparna Bisht Yadav, however, had joined the BJP and currently serves as the vice chairperson of the state Women Commission.
