Election Commission of India (ECI) declared on Saturday that a by-election for the Padampur assembly segment in Odisha will be held on December 5.

The outcomes will be announced on December 8.

Bijaya Ranjan Singh Bariha, a senior BJD politician and five-term MLA, fell away late on October 2 in a private hospital, necessitating the byelection. Bariha was elected to the state assembly five times from the Padampur seat in the Bargarh district, twice on Janata Dal tickets in 1990 and 1995 and three times on BJD tickets in 2000, 2009, and 2019.

Notably, Odisha just voted in the byelection for the Dhamnagar Assembly constituency, where the vote counting will occur on Sunday. In the by-election for the assembly sector in the Bhadrak district, turnout decreased by 3% and more women voted.

In 2018, the voter turnout was 68.98%, while in 2019 it was 71.93 In addition, 6441 more women than men voted in the by-election.
