The primary location where the ceremony’s official festivities take place is the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. Cambodia Independence Day History

During the 19th century, the kingdom of Cambodia was subjugated to the kingdom of Siam and subsequently transformed into a vassal state. King Norodom signed a treaty with France on August 11, 1863, asserting that the realm was now under the protection of France in an effort to liberate it from their dominion. The French occupation of Cambodia was the consequence of this treaty. In addition to seizing control of the city, France also assumed military and commercial authority over Cambodia.

Throughout World War II, the Japanese occupied and invaded Cambodia. Following a formal request from Japanese forces on March 9, 1945, King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia proclaimed the kingdom to be independent. The Japanese government withdrew its troops in support of Cambodia’s independence.

However, Cambodia had not been granted complete independence by the French. Cambodia was bestowed with self-governance under the French Union in 1946. The French revoked Cambodia’s protectorate status, which had been established by the treaty, in 1949. In 1949, the French formally ceased the protectorate status of Cambodia that had been instituted in accordance with the treaty. In June 1952, King Sihanouk of Cambodia commenced his advocacy for the formal recognition of Cambodia as an independent nation by removing his cabinet members from office, suspending the constitution, and assuming the position of prime minister.

During his March 1953 visit to France, King Sihanouk endeavored to convince the French to bestow full independence upon Cambodia. The French government announced on July 3, 1953, that it was prepared to grant complete independence to Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, as a result of the success of his campaign. Crown Prince Sihanouk reestablished absolute authority over the nation’s finances, military, police, foreign and commercial relations, and judicial system. The French abrogated their control over the military and security forces of Cambodia. As a consequence, all Cambodians regarded King Sihanouk as a national hero, and Independence Day is observed annually to commemorate his struggle for independence. The appellation “Father of Independence” was bestowed upon him.
