
According to an officer, the incident began when a lone resident was shot dead in his sleep by militants who had broken into his isolated home. This triggered a series of violent confrontations.

The incident transpired on Sunday when a firewood-laden truck was navigating over the Imphal river bridge.

Earlier on Thursday, Manipur police had indicated tension was prevailing and the situation was tense.

A Manipur Rifles policeman was killed and one person injured in a gunfight at Senjam Chirang in Imphal West district on Thursday morning, police said.

Earlier in a tweet Manipur chief minister N Biren Das said that strict action will be taken against all the culprits, including considering the possibility of capital punishment.

They said several police teams were formed immediately after the video of the incident surfaced.

Churachandpur is home to around four lakh people. Another 10,000 displaced people are living in the relief camps set up in the district.
