West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee said that the Centre was not aiding the state government to tackle the flood situation. “Flood waters have washed out away roads and bridges and damaged crops. The Centre is not helping… it is not doing anything (to alleviate the situation in Bengal),” Banerjee said.

The flood situation was improving in the state, but the toll owing to the deluge has risen to 50. At least 26 persons drowned, seven died of snakebites, six caused by lightning strikes, five in wall collapses, four were electrocuted, and two died in boat capsizes.

However, the water level had receded in most places and the number of relief camps has now been reduced to 151. Overall, 27 lakh people were affected in 105 blocks of 14 districts of West Bengal. The situation arises after heavy monsoon and release of water from the Damodar Valley Corporation dams.
