Chennai Power Shutdown on January 21: People who live in Chennai have been told to get ready as the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) has announced a power cut in various parts of the city on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The power cut during the day is a part of the routine maintenance and infrastructure upgrading that is being done to make the power network in the city more reliable in the longrun for both domestic and industrial users.
Chennai Power Shutdown on January 21
According to official notices and power department schedules, the shutdown will take place during daytime hours typically from 9:00 AM to around 2:00 PM though electricity may be restored sooner if maintenance work finishes ahead of schedule. These planned outages, TANGEDCO officials say, are essential for inspection, repairs and system enhancements that help prevent larger disruptions in future months.

Public Advisory
TANGEDCO’s scheduled shutdowns are not unusual, especially during the early part of the year when maintenance work is typically carried out across multiple substations and feeders. Officials emphasise that these outages are planned and necessary not emergency blackouts and that supply will resume at the earliest possible time once work is complete.
The local government and power company representatives have given the following suggestions to the people and the businesses:
- Power up the devices that you can’t do without and, if it’s possible, have the back-up power sources at hand.
- Move the critical activities that need electricity without interruption to the time of the outage.
- Keep track of the community announcements or TANGEDCO notifications for any change of schedule or zones affected.
Routine Maintenance to Minimise Disruptions
TANGEDCO’s maintenance work is a part of the larger scheme in Tamil Nadu to modernize and keep the power supply system in good condition. Preventive maintenance has also involved similar planned power cuts in recent months across Chennai and other parts of the state.
